A white -collar worker («работник в белом воротничке») — это служащий. A white-collar job — работа в учреждении, канцелярская работа. Имеется в виду традиционная одежда служащего в офисе — костюм, белая рубашка, галстук, туфли. Раньше служащих называли black-coat workers из-за чёрного пиджака и чёрных брюк в тонкую полоску. A blue-collar worker (рабочий) носит синюю рубашку или майку, джинсы, кроссовки. -

"новые воротнички"Представители среднего класса [ middle class] поколения "бума рождаемости" [ baby boom] (время рождения 1950-е; ежегодный доход около 40 тыс. долларов), часто выходцы из рабочего класса [ blue-collar worker], получившие образование. Составляют костяк работников сферы обслуживания и руководящих работников среднего звена. К ним относят также многочисленную группу лиц с высшим образованием, занимающих рабочие места в электронной промышленности. Прежде игнорировавшаяся, эта категория американцев сейчас находится под пристальным вниманием сферы торговли (благодаря своей огромной покупательной способности) и политических партий (так как они составляют около 15 процентов избирателей). Выражение появилось в середине 1980-х как комбинация слов [having a COLLAR of NEW kind], автором его считают чикагского журналиста К.
